Insight: CapChat/Brenda Hillman/Eppie's Kids/But Beautiful

Published May 16, 2014

Capitol Chat - The governor's race in California is heating up ahead of the June 3 primary. Republican candidates wanting to unseat California's current governor, Jerry Brown, are fighting to get on the ballot while progressive voters criticize Brown for not giving more money to social programs. Capitol Bureau Chief Ben Adler covers the governor's race and joins us to talk about it. He'll also explain Jerry Brown's latest spending plan for 2014-2015.

Brenda Hillman - Award-winning poet Brenda Hillman will be reading for the Women's Wisdom Project in Sacramento Monday at the Parkway Theater on 47th Street.

Eppie's Kids - This July will be the first "Eppie's Great Race" without Eppie Johnson. He died last September, not long after celebrating the race's 40th anniversary. Now Eppie's children, George Johnson and Lisa Mangels, are making a few changes. Instead of scheduling "Eppie's Kids Duathlon" and "Eppie's Great Race" the same day, Johnson's next of kin are separating the events by two months. That way, parents won't have to choose between participating in the race or watching their children race. Joining us to talk about the changes to the kids duathlon, scheduled for this Saturday, is George Johnson and his children Athena Johnson and Eppie "E.J." Johnson.

But Beautiful - Davis-based pianist Lara Downes discovered Billie Holiday as a young girl flipping through her mother's record collection. Fast forward to this weekend and you'll find Downes performing some of Holiday's greatest songs at the Mondavi Center in the remembrance "But Beautiful." She has also recently released an album she recorded with cellist Zuill Bailey called "Some Other Time." We'll talk with Downes about the concerts Saturday and Sunday at Mondavi and her collaboration with Bailey.
